I’m sure you’ve seen guys who look like they can win a fight with no problem. Usually, it’s not their size that makes them seem tough, it’s just the fact that they’re solid and thick, with an aggressive attitude. These are the kind of fellows who work as bouncers at clubs and bars. Perhaps they’re doormen or security guards. These guys never let their facade of strength slip. They understand that kindness or passivity is weakness, and they keep their minds and bodies strong and capable. In short, they’re always prepared for the possibility of violence.
Often, these guys are willing to start fights. They are not tough because of years of training, they’re tougher than most simply because they’re not afraid to throw the first punch (and follow it up). They don’t wait around to get sucker punched or blindsided. Instead, they start the violence on their own terms, and finish it so it won’t reignite later. They’re not making things up as they go along.
So if you never start trouble, but you always feel like you’re getting into situations where bullies are taking advantage of you, there are probably a few things you can learn from bouncers and security guys. You’ll probably conclude that these guys are cool under pressure and they can handle violent situations better than most folks who don’t get into situations of the sort as often. And you would be correct. Bouncers, security guards, and doormen know what works. And they don’t bother with trends or hype, they only do what has been proven successful.
If you talk to fighters about how to take a punch, you’ll probably get a few different answers. But most boxers or martial artists will tell you that you have to make your neck as strong as possible.. The stronger your neck, the easier it is to withstand a punch to the head.. The head doesn’t snap around as much, and it’s not as easy to get knocked out. That bullheaded, thick-neck appearance that most fighters have is not just coincidence. There’s a reason for it.. It might look a bit neanderthal-like, but it works to protect you during a fight.
Another thing experienced fighters all have in common is they know to keep their eyes open. Guys who want to protect themselves never look away from a potential threat. The reason is, this is the way you get knocked out — by not keeping an eye on your opponent’s fists. If you don’t see a punch coming, it’ll hurt you. But you can always avoid the punch that you know is coming towards you.
This is the reason good fighters or martial artists never throw solitary, single punches.. A good boxing combination is more than just a few punches strung together because they look good.. It actually disguises the power punch so the opponent has much less of a chance of seeing it. Because when he can’t see it, he won’t be able to defend against it, slip it, duck it, or block it.
So, don’t worry about it if you didn’t start MMA or boxing training at a super-young age. With a strong body (that you can develop with a simple barbell), some basic fighting knowledge, and a good attitude, you have all you need. Work out with other positive people and you’ll be able to hold your own any day.
